“Mother Earth “  Art Doll Challenge—deadline December 18th

Help us celebrate Earth Day with art! Make an art doll representing Mother Earth and enter our reader challenge.  We’ll show a selection of our favorites in the March/April 2010 issue of Cloth Paper Scissors and on our website.

But hurry, the deadline for submitting your entry via email is December 18, 2009.

Here are the rules

  1. Create one mixed-media art doll representing your interpretation of Mother Earth. Your art doll may be made out of any materials, but she can be no larger than 12" tall and 8" wide, with a depth no more than 2".
  2. Your entry must be free of any text or images that are protected by copyright, unless you have the expressed written permission from the person or institution that holds the copyright and you provide that written permission with your submission.
  3. You may use any pattern you like—or none—provided the doll fits the dimensions listed above. If you want guidance, there is a pattern and directions for an art doll by Nola Hart in the November/December 2009 issue of Cloth Paper Scissors as well as another art doll interpretation by Melanie Testa. There are also directions for a basic art doll by Debbi Crane in the September/October 2009 issue.
  4. To be considered for the challenge, send two low-res (each less than 1MB) images of your entry (one of the entire piece and one detail) via email by December 18th, 2009, to challenges@interweave.com, with the words “Mother Earth” in the subject line. Please include your name, physical address, email address, phone number, and a brief explanation of the piece.
note: Please do not “zip” your files and be sure to send jpegs.
  5. We will announce the finalists on Assistant Editor Barbara Delaney’s blog on quiltingarts.com on Tuesday, December 22.
  6. If accepted, your artwork must be in our offices no later than January 8, 2010, and at that time a flat shipping and handling fee of $15 (U.S. and Canada) and $25 (all other international) will be due.
(Note: Our offices will be closed December 24, 2009 through January 3, 2010, so please plan to mail your entry to arrive before December 24 or after January 3.)
  7. The entire piece (or pieces) and all of its packaging must weigh less than 5 lbs. and fit into a standard shipping/mailing box (no larger than 12" x 4" x 14") or padded envelope.

Announcing the Cloth Paper Scissors® 2011 Calendar Contest
“Make It Pretty!”

We’re looking for some pretty mixed-media art for the Cloth Paper Scissors 2011 Calendar: pretty funny, pretty unusual, pretty inspiring—or just plain pretty! Each month and the cover will feature a piece of 12” x 12” artwork by one of you, our readers. The 13 winning entries (the cover and 12 months) will receive a prize package worth $200.

How it works

  • Create up to two original, not previously published, 12” x 12” square, pieces of mixed-media artwork based on the theme of “Make it Pretty!” Each piece of art must be 12” x 12”, with a depth (height when laid flat) of no more than 2” and the entire submission, including packaging, must weigh no more than 5 lbs. The artwork should also be sturdy enough to be wrapped and shipped for display at various quilt and textile shows with Cloth Paper Scissors.

Please note: Your entry must be free of any text or images that are protected by copyright unless you have the expressed written permission from the person or institution that holds the copyright and you provide that written permission with your submission.

  • Because the winning pieces will be photographed at their actual size and used in the 12” x 12” format, all embellishments on the submissions must remain within the 12” x 12” x 2” boundary; unfortunately, submissions that open to a larger format, have a pocket or flap with a hidden artistic element, or that have embellishments that extend beyond the border cannot be accepted.

  • Although we welcome all mixed-media styles, each entry should be of original design, created for this challenge, and fit the theme. Also, though we encourage you to follow your muse, please be aware that artwork that is overall very dark or very shiny does not photograph well, and is thus is less likely to be chosen.

  • Submit three 8” x 10” photographs of each submission, one of the full piece and two detail shots. To give your submission the best chance of being accurately evaluated, please make sure the photographs are well-lit, clear, and are printed on photo-quality paper (not copy paper). Please label each photo with your first and last names, address, phone number, and email address.

  • Along with your photos, please include a brief narrative explaining your interpretation of our theme, “Make it Pretty!”, as well as the methods and materials used in your artwork.

  • Deadline for entry: Monday, March 1, 2010. Please note that this is a receive-by date. Your photos and descriptions must be in our office no later than March 1st.

  • On Monday, March 15, 2010, we will announce the finalists on our website and ask them to ship the actual artwork to our office. Please check the website on that date. Finalists will also be emailed.

  • On Monday, May 17, 2010, we will announce the winners on our website and contact them via email.

Please note: We reserve the right to keep the 13 winning pieces for display through December 31, 2011.
