Artful Ingredients

Recipe cards by Peggy Holt (lavender stitched edging) and Katie Kendrick.

Barbara Lawrence shows readers how to turn family recipes into collaged “snow globes” by encasing the altered recipe cards and fun “floaters” in vinyl, in the May/June issue of Cloth Paper Scissors, on newsstands now. Here are some of Barbara’s ideas for presenting your cards and artful ingredients to use in making them.

Ideas for collaged vinyl recipe cards

Recipe cards

  • Fried chicken or potato salad. Float plastic ants or dried watermelon seeds.
  • Chili, with a filler of red pepper flakes and dried beans
  • Christmas cookies or a Yule log cake. Floaters could be fake snow or pine needles and then embellish with jingle bells.

Invitations

  • Pirate party. The recipe might be buried treasure cupcakes, typed or written on burned parchment paper. The filler could be beach sand, jewels, and a paper tattoo.

Keepsakes

  • Make a "recipe" for a loving marriage. Embellish with hanging ribbons and charms and include a photograph of the bride and groom. Fill with rice or birdseed.
  • Pass on a family favorite. Insert a vintage photograph of the family seated at the table, or the photo of a loved one, along with his or her famous recipe.

Gifts

  • A recipe for lavender bath salts with fresh lavender as filler.
  • A "recipe" for growing a certain plant, with images of the plant and floating seeds.
  • A recipe for a wine-based marinade, with a collage including a wine label and a paper or silk grape leaf. The floaters could be grape-colored beads or bits of cork, with wine-glass charms hanging off the bottom edge.

Embellishment ideas

  • Add a handle for hanging or for use as an ornament
  • Couch ribbon or yarn onto the exterior or around the edges
  • Lace the pieces together, corset-style
  • Stitch different colors of vinyl strips atop a clear base, like appliqué
  • Make your card itself a shape (pocket, apron, heart, etc)
  • Pleat or ruffle
  • Sew in a zipper
  • Stitch a design over the top (argyle, grid, circles, etc)
  • Link several cards together with jump rings
  • Hang ribbons or threads of the edges, perhaps with attached charms
  • Add an exterior pocket for a personal message, a small gift, or money

Ideas for goodies to float within

  • Glitter, confetti, sequins
  • Coffee beans
  • Tea leaves, or tea bag
  • Dried beans or pasta
  • Dried herbs, seeds, or spices such as whole cloves
  • Small silk flowers, petals, or leaves
  • Fortunes from cookies
  • Tiny toys, prizes, or charms
  • Bottle caps
  • Old or foreign coins and tokens
  • Vintage buttons, concert pins, jewelry
  • Feathers
  • Pebbles
  • Pencil shavings
  • Shells
  • Small skeleton keys
  • Clothing labels
  • Fabric selvage color strips
  • Cut paper words, or snips of metal with embossed words
  • Food quotations or poems
  • Snips of thread, ribbons, trim
  • Small photos or photo booth images
  • Old photo slides or negatives
  • Postage stamps
  • Pieces of netting, mesh, or cheesecloth
  • Images or words printed on clear contact paper, transparency sheets, or organza
