Fiber & Mixed-media Trends from Cloth Paper Scissors Issue 72
|
Dear John,
Welcome to the latest edition of Cloth Paper Scissors Embellishments. This week, mixed-media fiber artist Lesley Riley offers tips on quick and easy ways to build your stash of painted fibers, we offer you two wonderful new books, ask you for your "green art" ideas, and more. |
Stash Building - As Easy as 1·2·3
By Lesley Riley
When painting backgrounds on fabric, paper, or Lutradur®, double or triple your output by layering before you paint. Stacking materials lets the paint seep through them all while you work on the top one.
The results are threefold: 1) you save time and effort; 2) you get a color coordinated supply of different textures and surfaces; and 3) as the paint seeps through each successive layer, you get gorgeous serendipitous patterns and effects without even trying. Using a highly pigmented fluid acrylic guarantees that the bottom layer is as color rich as the top.
MATERIALS
DIRECTIONS
1. Protect your work surface with plastic. 2. Create your layers: Bottom - paper (always on bottom since paint does not penetrate paper); middle - fabric; top - open-weave fabric. 3. Wet some areas of the stack with water so the paints will easily blend on their own. Paint the top layer, blending paints with more water. When finished, set the top layer aside to dry and continue to paint to each successive layer until finished. (Don't forget the back of the paper.)
*Note: We have several Golden products already in our online store, with more colors and textures on their way.
 Try these ideas!
- Blot papers with fabrics
-
Monoprint painted papers onto fabric
-
Before painting, stamp, stencil, or screen-print fabrics and papers with Golden Soft Gel Medium. Let dry before painting. Gel medium will act as a resist, adding pattern as you paint. |

Two New Books!
Altered! Art Projects by Jill Haglund pulls together a variety of projects, styles, and techniques for making altered art projects. Using found or store-bought objects (like boxes, small suitcases, frames, and drawers), ephemera, and embellishments, some of the best-known names in collage and assemblage show readers how to make altered art that celebrate good time, treasured memories, family, and home.
Vintage Paper Crafts by Anna Corba is perfect for the reader who loves to collect vintage ephemera and wants to use it in a decorative way without a huge investment of time or materials. Projects include tea-dyed and collaged tags; stamped vintage hangers; a hand-and-heart jewelry holder; a découpaged wooden cake stand; an altered journal; a variety of embellished cards and hanging ornaments; and many more. The book is a feast for the eyes and includes several pages of clip art and patterns.

Are You Going Green?
In the latest issue of Cloth Paper Scissors we asked readers how they are 'going green" in their artwork-repurposing, recycling, and re-creating in their art. If you are "going green" in an unusual way, let us know!
