Plate it up
Roylco Rubbing Plates are 7" X 7" embossed plastic plates that come in designs that mimic animal skins, fabric patterns, lace, and wood grains, and in motifs such as pop culture, fine art, mazes, animals and figures, and optical illusions. Kids use them to make rubbings with paper and crayons, and so can you, but here are five other ways to use Roylco Rubbing Plates in your art:
- Use it as a stamp. Dip one side in a shallow tray skimmed with acrylic or fabric paint and stamp on paper or fabric.
- Make an impression. Roll out some Model Magic or Friendly Plastic and impress it with a rubbing plate. Let dry and paint.
- Design your own handmade paper. Using a sponge, coat one side of the plate with a thin layer of watered-down white glue. Lay tissue paper on top of the plate and coat with a second layer of glue. Add a third layer of tissue and glue, and then splash some watercolor paint on top. Let dry, then carefully peel your paper off the plate.
- Make a surface design on fabric. Tape a piece of fabric to a hard surface with the plate underneath. Rub over the surface with Shiva. Paintstiks. to create your design. When dry, heat set with an iron.
- Combine plate textures to make scenes or patchwork patterns.
