Free-motion Stitched Coasters

By Patricia Bolton

MATERIALS

DIRECTIONS

1. Tape rubbing plate to a table and tape a piece of white paper on top.
2. Use the fabric crayons to do a rubbing.
3. Set iron to the cotton setting and iron the paper with the rubbed image face down onto your hand-dyed fabric.
4. Pin the hand-dyed fabric to the interfacing and free-motion stitch around the lines of the transferred design.
5. Trim to 4" square and zigzag-stitch the edges.

You can also use Shiva Paintstiks with the rubbing plates. These can be applied directly to fabric taped on top of a rubbing plate. Allow to cure for three days and then free-motion stitch. For more ideas with Shiva Paintstiks and rubbing plates, see Shelley Stokes’ book, Paintstiks on Fabric.

Interested in making other small projects? See D’Arcy-Jean Milne's book, Fabric Leftovers: Simple, adaptable ways to use up scraps.

Calling All Artists

Along with our adult readers, we’d like to challenge creative kids and teens to make up to five ATCs each and bring them to trade at our Make It University booth at the International Quilt Festival in Chicago April 13-15. This is our last big ATC swap, so teachers, Scout leaders, parents, and grandparents, get your junior artists creating and bring them, and their ATCs, along with you to the show.
