Experiment with Aquabond using Threads, Scrims and Yarns

Aquabond is a water-soluble adhesive stabilizer that’s perfect for creating one-of-a-kind scarves using thread, trims, and yarns. Try it out by making a sample, and then fashion an easy, wash-away scarf.

Here are basic instructions for making small sample. (Complete instructions for a 14" x 36" scarf come in the package):

MATERIALS

  • 6" x 6" piece of Aquabond
  • Tape (transparent or masking)
  • Aqua Film (optional)
  • Assorted lightweight fabrics such as scrims and organzas
  • Yarns, bits of silk roving, or decorative threads
  • Sewing maching and free-motion foot
  • Scissors
  • Machine threads
  • Plastic wrap
  • Seed beads(optional)

DIRECTIONS

  1. Peel theAquabond from the release paper and place on a flat surface so that the sticky side of the Aquabond is facing up. Tape down to the surface on all four sides.
  2. Cut and place scrims, organza, and other fabrics of choice to create grids or organic shapes. Take longer pieces of yarns, silk roving, etc., and tamp them down along the perimeter of each piece of fabric. Make sure these pieces of yarns, decorative threads, or silk roving overlap each other so they will interlock once the Aquabond is removed.
  3. At this point you can take the sample to your sewing machine as is, or cover the entire piece with a very lightweight stabilizer such as Aqua Film. Press the Aqua Film or other lightweight stabilizer onto the fiber pieces to lock them all together. Sandwiching the pieces like this will make your piece stronger and a bit easier to machine stitch.
  4. Machine-stitch with contrasting or coordinating thread around the outer edge of each piece of fabric and on top of the yarns, making sure you connect all of the fabric pieces.
  5. Use scissors to cut away the excess Aquabond from around the sample, cutting as close to the piece as possible.
  6. Fill a basin with warm water. Immerse the sample and let sit for a minute or two. Gently swish to remove the stabilizer. Repeat until all the stabilizer is removed. Lay on a piece of plastic wrap to dry.
  7. Once dry, add beads if desired.
