Instant Texture Technique
Art and technique by Margaret Talbot
Materials:
- Muslin (approx. 1 fat quarter)
- Scraps of rickrack, braids, crocheted motifs, and laces (any color)
- Sewing machine and threads
- Pebeo Expandable Paint
- Heat gun
- Acrylic paints
- Paint brushes, expired credit card
Directions:
- Arrange laces, motifs, and trims on top of the muslin in an interesting pattern. Don't worry about the colors coordinating, as they will be covered later.
- Stitch all over the lace and trims in a meandering way to anchor them in place. (Use bits of fusible webbing or pins to keep the trims in place while stitching, if necessary.)
- Using an old credit card or a similar tool, spread a thin layer of expandable paint over the tops and in the crevices of the surface texture. When it's dry, apply a heat gun to the surface, causing the paint to puff up and add more dimension to the texture.
- Paint with several colors of acrylic paint, let dry, and then dry brush metallic acrylics or rub in Shiva oil sticks to highlight the texture. Allow to dry thoroughly.
- Use your new textured textile as is (for example, as a journal cover) or cut up and incorporate into a collage.
For more on this technique, see the Summer 2005 issue of Cloth Paper Scissors magazine.
