Medieval Impressions
Lutradur Bag Project
Lutradur is a spun-bonded polyester fabric which when heated with a heat gun will dissolve rather than melt into the most beautiful soft cobweb effect. When used in conjunction with a wet medium such as acrylic paint or three-dimension medium as a mask, the Lutradur will dissolve around the medium, but not through the medium.
Materials: · 1 Sheet of Lutradur®, approx. 11" x 15" (28 x 40cm) · Three-dimensional medium such as Pebeo® Expandable Paint · Gilt wax, such as Treasure-Gold or Rub-Ons · Colored tissue paper · Foam stamp of your choice · Heat gun · Beads · Hand-sewing materials · Sewing machine1. Cut a piece of Lutradur about 11" x 15" 2. Lay flat and paint with a water-based paint, plain or metallic, such as Jacquard or Golden. Let dry. 3. Decide on your patterning motif and print the Lutradur with your foam stamp using a three-dimensional medium such as Expandable Paint. Paint the medium onto the stamp evenly and thinly. You don't want the medium to expand too much. You can now apply the heat gun while the medium is still wet or allow it to dry first to achieve a slightly flatter finish. You may need to practice with the heat gun on a spare piece of Lutradur to get the finish you want. Wafting the heat gun close to the surface of the Lutradur usually works best, but try for yourself first. 4. When you are satisfied with the effect, rub gilt wax onto the surface of the expanded medium, not too much at first, and build up the effect gradually. 5. Lay the Lutradur onto a piece of colored tissue paper the same size as the Lutradur and embellish with hand stitching and beads, stitching through the Lutradur and the paper. 6. Fold the piece in half placing the right sides together and stitch a ¼" seam down each side. Stitch out the corners. 7. Turn through to the right side, turn over a ¼" seam allowance at the top edge and stitch down. 8. Attach a handle of your choice.
