Peek Inside an Editor's Studio:
Features Editor Cate Prato

Last Christmas my husband turned the former maid's quarters, a 6' x 8' room in our 108-year-old attic, into a sewing and craft room. After he painted warm pink over the dark, original beadboard and put down a shiny new floor, I went in with lace and knickknacks blazing, putting up floral curtains, laying down an old hooked rug, and arranging my fabrics, supplies, and vintage inspirational pieces while humming like Snow White redecorating the dwarves' cottage.

However, one year, many stolen hours, and several last-minute projects later, the place was a holy mess. Beads scattered across the floor, paper stuck to the desk top, mounds of fabric scraps everywhere-I couldn't find a thing. So, inspired by our brainstorming sessions about the Cloth Paper Scissors Studios special issue, I spent all of New Year's Day organizing my little spot. I folded fabrics, sorted beads, emptied drawers full of junk and refilled them neatly with spools of thread, popped all my pins into my teapot pincushion, and found a ton of stuff I forgot I had. Best of all, I thought of a zillion ideas for projects to do in the coming year.

I feel lucky to have a dedicated creative space, even though it's small. But many wonderful artists work out of their bedrooms or in the corner of their kitchens. We'll show you have to make the most of your space--with tips and tricks for organizing on a budget, in the Studios issue, debuting April 1. (No foolin'!)

Be sure to pre-order your Studios issue today, and watch for another peek inside an editor's studio in a future newsletter.
