5 Ways to Go Green with Your Art

In the new issue of Quilting Arts Magazine (February/March), Natalya Aikens shows how she recycles materials in her quilts. Here are a couple of her suggestions, plus some ideas of our own.

1. Re-use plastic materials like produce netting and grocery bags. Stitch them, heat them, and knit or twist them to create texture in your designs.
2. Wash and save foam trays and packing material and use them to make stamps. Etch a design with a dried-up ballpoint pen or cut into shapes.
3. Wipe up studio spills (paint, ink, coffee) with paper towels or small fabric "rags" you would otherwise throw away. Let them dry and stitch them.
4. When mailing your art--especially if there's nothing fragile in it--use as little packaging as possible. Avoid "foam peanuts."
