Cloth Paper Scissors

the “Postcards from _________” Reader Challenge

We want to see where you have gone, or plan to go, on vacation or holiday so next winter we can savor those long, warm, lazy days, and share them with our other readers. To take our challenge, create a book of fabric postcards, similar to a snapshot album or creative sketchbook, that shows us your favorite vacation spot. It could be somewhere you actually went, a place you used to “summer,” or scenes from a trip that you hope to take someday. Just fill in the blank.

Your postcard pages do not have to include actual photographs, though you may choose to do so; the images and designs you use may be representational or abstract and rendered in any media you choose. You may include images of people and places, objects or materials you find at your vacation spot (such as sand, fishing line, coins, or native plants). You may use real ephemera and found objects or represent them using stitch, ink, paint, photo-transfer, etc. Or, you can simply portray the feelings and moods your vacation retreat evokes. Please be sensitive, however, to copyright laws and do not include labels with commercial imagery or logos that could be considered a violation of copyright (such as Disney imagery or Coca-Cola labels, as examples).

We’ll include some of your entries in the December/January 2008 issue of Quilting Arts Magazine—a time when we most need to remember the balmy breezes of summer.

Here are the rules

  1. Your “Postcard Album” should consist of four pages, including the cover. Both sides of each page should be decorated in some way.
  2. Each page should be 4" x 6" and have a fabric base.
  3. Your pages and the book itself may be oriented in horizontal or vertical format.
  4. The book must be bound at one end.
  5. You may use any techniques, materials, or embellishments you like, but the entire artwork, packaging, and mailing materials must weigh less than or equal to 5 lbs.—no more. No exceptions.
  6. Your artwork must be free of any text or images that are protected by copyright, unless you have the expressed written permission from the person or institution that holds the copyright and you provide that written permission with your submission.
  7. Enclose a brief narrative telling how you created your book, including the name of the book, the vacation spot depicted, and the materials and techniques used.
  8. Include a label with your full name, street address, email address, and phone number sewn, fused, glued, or written (as appropriate to your art) on the back of your book.
  9. Be sure to include a photo of the finished book with your name, street address, email address, and phone number printed clearly on the back.
  10. Include an entry fee of $15 (for U.S. and Canadian residents) or $20 (for all other international residents). This fee, which must be paid in U.S. dollars, covers the shipping, packing materials, and handling for the return of your “Postcard Album” challenge project. Participants, including international residents, may charge their entry fee to their credit card. Please include the necessary information, including the expiration date. (We accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express).
  11. All projects will be mailed back to participants between April 30 and May 7, 2008, via UPS. Entries from areas not serviced by UPS will be sent via USPS.

Please note: If you will be out of town during the week we will be returning the entries, or your address changes before the books are due to be returned, please let us know via email so that we can be sure your artwork is sent to the correct address.

One book per person, please.

If you would like to know if your entry arrived safely, please provide a self-addressed, stamped postcard that we can check off and return. Due to the volume of entries we receive, we are not able to respond to emails and phone calls asking if your book has arrived at our offices.

Deadline: Your “Postcard Album” project must be received by Monday, August 20, 2007. Please note that we must receive your artwork before or on this date, no later. We will feature some of the quilts in our December/January issue coming out in December, 2007.
